For diffeomorphisms of smooth compact finite-dimensional manifolds, we consider the problem of how fast the number of periodic points with period n grows as a function of n. In many familiar cases (e.g., Anosov systems) the growth is exponential, but arbitrarily fast growth is possible; in fact, the first author has shown that arbitrarily fast growth is topologically (Baire) generic for C or smoother diffeomorphisms. In the present work we show that, by contrast, for a measure-theoretic notion of genericity we call “prevalence”, the growth is not much faster than exponential. Specifically, we show that for each ρ, δ > 0, there is a prevalent set of C (or smoother) diffeomorphisms for which the number of period n points is bounded above by exp(Cn) for some C independent of n. We also obtain a related bound on the decay of hyperbolicity of the periodic points as a function of n, and obtain the same results for 1-dimensional endomorphisms. The contrast between topologically generic and measure-theoretically generic behavior for the growth of the number of periodic points and the decay of their hyperbolicity shows this to be a subtle and complex phenomenon, reminiscent of KAM theory. Here in Part I we state our results and describe the methods we use. We complete most of the proof in the 1-dimensional C-smooth case and outline the remaining steps, deferred to Part II, that are needed to establish the general case. The novel feature of the approach we develop in this paper is an introduction of Newton Interpolation Polynomials as a tool of perturbing trajectories of iterated maps.

Growth of Periodic Points and Rotation Vectors on Surfaces

In this paper will consider diffeomorphisms f : M → M of a compact surface M , isotopic to the identity map, and study the growth of their periodic points. An important approach to studying such properties of diffeomorphisms is via the rotation set ρ(f) and the associated rotation vectors. For the particular case of homeomorphisms of tori Franks has shown that if ρ(f) has non-empty interior the...

Summary of Publications and Preprints

Call diffeomorphisms satisfying (2) Artin-Mazur (A-M) diffeomorphisms. In [I.1] we give an elementary proof of an extension of Artin–Mazur’s result, namely, we prove that A-M diffeomorphisms with only hyperbolic periodic points are dense in Diffr(M). In [I.2] we construct Baire generic diffeomorphisms inside of an open set (a Newhouse domain) in Diffr(M) of with superexponential (even an arbitr...

Trends of Growth Rate among Iranian Infants: Comparison Exponential Model and Points Average Model and Related Factors

Background Childhood growth factors play an essential role in the process of child development. Providing an accurate measurement for determining the growth rate predictors longitudinally has an advantage over a growth chart that only measures cumulative growth. This study aimed to determine the trends in growth rate and its effective factors a...

Generic Diffeomorphisms with Superexponential Growth of Number of Periodic Orbits

Let M be a smooth compact manifold of dimension at least 2 and Diff (M) be the space of C smooth diffeomorphisms of M . Associate to each diffeomorphism f ∈ Diff (M) the sequence Pn(f ) of the number of isolated periodic points for f of period n. In this paper we exhibit an open set N in the space of diffeomorphisms Diff (M) such for a Baire generic diffeomorphism f ∈ N the number of periodic p...
